A sea of delights!
This March, visitors will be able to choose from a rich and diverse programme of ballets. However, judging by the list of renowned stars taking the stage this month, you can’t go wrong when choosing a production.
At long last, Ivan Vasiliev will appear in the 27 March production of Le Corsaire. The accomplished dancer surely won’t feel like a «fish out of water» in this lively and spirited ballet, featuring the deep blue sea, daring pirates, and astounding adventures. Vasiliev overflows with indomitable energy, as he executes astonishing pirouettes and unbelievable jumps. The uniquely talented performer is relentless in his determination to keep the art of ballet at its peak popularity. When he’s involved, the production is sure to be a celebration.
Nikolai Tsiskaridze is something of a legend in the world of ballet. And now, he’s returned to the stage for one single role. His performance as the Widow Simone in La Fille mal gardée is truly the work of a distinguished master. Tsiskaridze not only transforms into a woman with astonishing authenticity, he also conveys the heroine’s vivid and distinct personality. Every aspect of his portrayal has been intricately developed, making it impossible to find a more compelling Widow. Discussing his heroine in a past interview, Nikolai Tsiskaridze noted, «I often joke that, if you look at her ankle, you can see that Widow Simone was once a prima ballerina.» The artist may be taking the stage in a woman’s costume, wig, and chest padding, but nevertheless, audiences will «recognize the internationally renowned dancer by his legs.» The role, which began as a joke, has long been enshrined in the ballet hall of fame, and La Fille mal gardée continues to grow in popularity with each new season. Nikolai Tsiskaridze will perform on 7 and 8 March.
The performances leading up to International Women’s Day have been reserved for a particularly «masculine» production: Aram Khachaturian’s buff and rugged ballet, Spartacus, directed by Georgy Kovtun. Thanks to his fiery stage presence and expressive visage, Igor Tsvirko is particularly convincing in his portrayal of the mighty Spartacus. The aesthetics of our production feel familiar and natural to the talented artist, who was recently named principal dancer of the Bolshoi Theatre ballet company. He plays a hero who is explosive and restless in nature, but able to overcome his inner qualms and fight without reserve or relent. You can catch our Muscovite guest in Spartacus on 5 March. The charismatic Denis Matvienko will take on the role of his antagonist, the military commander Crassus. Matvienko portrays Crassus as a man of extremes, whose emotions can range from cold and calculating to utter madness. Farukh Ruzimatov will take the stage as the Roman consul Pompey on 3, 4, and 5 March. In this new role, created expressly for the talented performer, Ruzimatov adds a unique flair to the polyphonic choreography of the production.
