A History of the Theatre in Cartoons
In preparation for International Theatre Day, an exhibition of cartoons and caricatures by Paul Robert, Mikhail Molodyashin, and Lyudmila Miloradovich, who all worked for the theatre at various times in the past, has opened in the stalls circle foyer.
The exhibition includes cartoon sketches by the three artists relating to different periods in the history of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Thirty works by Paul Robert from his Nos artistes français: Caricatures et autographes des artistes du Théatre Michel give spontaneous depictions of the life of the celebrated company, as well as the morals and fashions at the turn of the 20th century. Drawings by Lyudmila Miloradovich depict the rehearsal process for Carmen in 1933. The works of Mikhail Molodyashin go back to the same period. The Turnip of Corneville, a comic retrieved from the theatre archives, recounts the challenges encountered in staging Robert Julien Planquette’s comic opera, The Bells of Corneville, at the Maly Opera Theatre.
