A Five-Star Opera
La Juive, 10 May
Jacques Halévy’s opera La Juive is one of the most popular productions in the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s current repertoire.
The opera has an almost hypnotic effect on the audience, who follow every twist of the tense plot with unabated attention. A splendid cast has again been assembled for 10 May, when La Juive will be performed for the last time this season. The five star soloists represent two vocal schools: American and Russian.
The principal male role will once again be sung by the celebrated American tenor Neil Shicoff, who is considered to be “the definitive Eléazar”. The other tenor part (Prince Léopold) has been entrusted to Robert McPherson, who will be making his Russian debut. Like his world-famous colleague, Robert McPherson began his singing career in the USA; his performances in La Donna del Lago (New York City Opera), Der Rosenkavalier (San Francisco Opera) and L’Italiana in Algeri (Washington National Opera) were highly acclaimed by the critics. The New York Times acclaimed his “robust voice, agility and confidence”. Robert McPherson recently sang the part of Prince Léopold at the New Israeli Opera, where the Opera News reviewer remarked that “his superb haut tenor (was) remarkable in the portrayal of the corrupt lover”. The bass role of Cardinal de Brogni will be performed by Alexey Tanovitsky (Mariinsky Theatre). The female roles will be sung by Mikhailovsky Theatre soloists: the lyric soprano Tatiana Ryaguzova will appear as Rachel and the coloratura soprano Natalia Mironova as Princess Eudoxie.
On 10 May La Juive will be available to watch worldwide via a live Internet broadcast at www.mikhailovsky.ru/live, www.rt.ru and www.paraclassics.com. It will be the sixth live broadcast in this 179th season.
