A concert for lovers

The Mikhailovsky Theatre presents P.S. Love, a special concert for anyone whose heart is open to sincerity and joy. This Valentine’s Day, on 14 February, Musical Director Alevtina Ioffe will take up her baton to bring some amazing music to life, stopping your heart, bringing a tear to your eye, and making you hold your breath with her boundless energy.

“All ages are subject to love” — a fact of which the so titled famous aria from Eugene Onegin leaves us in no doubt. Nevertheless, this Valentine’s Day concert is aimed first and foremost at young people, with very reasonable ticket prices available to Pushkin Card holders. The programme for this celebratory evening features some huge hits, including the best tunes from some iconic musicals and films.
France is often called “the land of love”, and this will be reflected in the style of the concert. Suffice to say that the programme will incorporate the incredible themes written by Francis Lai and Michel Legrand for the films A Man and a Woman and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, the best excerpts from the musical Notre Dame de Paris, and even a rock adaptation of the famous Bell Song by Léo Delibes. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera can also be considered French in spirit, because it is based on the plot of the novel by Gaston Leroux, and the story, as you may know, unfolds in Paris. Arias from Bernstein’s Candide will provide a taste of Broadway energy, while extracts from the musical Beauty and the Beast will bring some Disney magic to the stage. Astor Piazzolla’s popular tangos will add a sensual touch to the romantic programme. The concert will feature performances by leading opera soloists, as well as the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s own symphonic orchestra and chorus.
