A book to introduce children to the world of theatre

“Theatre is a wonderland. With one magical wave of the conductor’s baton, beautiful music starts to play and the curtain is silently lifted.” These are the opening words of a new book targeting young theatregoers as well as children who are yet to visit a theatre. Along with the book’s main characters, classmates Polina and Petya, the readers embark on a tour of the Mikhailovsky Theatre, which turns into an exciting adventure. The school friends become involved in a confrontation between two fairies, the good Lilac Fairy and the wicked Carabosse. It becomes the children’s job to help the good fairy save the upcoming production of The Sleeping Beauty.

The authors of the book, titled The Adventures of Polina and Petya at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, are well-known St. Petersburg writer Irada Vovnenko and illustrator Ekaterina Posetselskaya. The engrossing and richly detailed text, replete with numerous colourful illustrations, takes the readers to the very heart of the theatrical realm and reveals that behind all the characters, music, props, and on-stage wonders lies the hard work of a large creative team.

The next generation of theatregoers is the future of the Mikhailovsky Theatre. This soon-to-be-published book has been created especially for them. The success of a production hinges not only on the singers and dancers, but also on the patrons. The book will help readers understand the history of theatre, the daily realities of life in the theatre, and related terminology. Children will also learn theatre etiquette: for example, why it is important not to be late and not to make noise, why theatre binoculars are necessary, and why mobile phones must be turned off.
