29 April is International Dance Day!

International Dance Day, backed by UNESCO, has been celebrated every year since 1982. It is held on the birthday of French ballet master Jean-Georges Noverre, the theorist who reformed the art of choreography. In 1759, Noverre wrote about his experiences in his famous work Lettres sur la Danse and outlined the founding principles of modern ballet theatre, where pantomime and dance are used in a creative alliance with the composer and stage designer.

To mark this special day, we have put together a selection of photographs featuring the stars of the Mikhailovsky ballet company.
