The Mikhailovsky Theatre on Tour in Canada
The Mikhailovsky ballet will present Swan Lake at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. Canadian public is looking forward to seeing the famous ballet that has become the symbol of Russian art itself.
The stage that was chosen for the tour has the reputation of one of the most comfortable, capacious and prestigious venues in North America. The Vancouver theatre was opened on June, 5 1959; one month later Her Majesty Elizabeth II visited it and officially gave the theatre Her name.
From the beginning of1960-s, it became the Canadian outpost of the theatrical art: performances in Vancouver were included into the touring programs of the greatest Broadway shows. At the same time Queen Elizabeth Theatre established itself as the center of Vancouver opera and ballet life: its stage has accepted the companies of the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky). The resident performing arts companies at the theatre are the Vancouver opera and Ballet British Columbia.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre presents the legendary «Old Moscow» production of Swan Lake; Mikhail Messerer has restored the version by Alexander Gorsky — Asaf Messerer. It was this version that was shown abroad in the middle of1950-s and strengthened the world fame of the Russian ballet. The Mikhailovsky production is a unique example of the careful and respectful attitude to the ballet heritage. It preserves the emotional power and freshness of perception while reviving the style and atmosphere of the old times.
The production was on tour three times: in London (Summer, 2010), Moscow (Spring, 2011), Japan (January, 2012). It had a huge success every time; in Moscow it was received with «full house and awe» («Kommersant»); in London its charm has won even the strict British critics. The Times has noted that «the production is light and easy flowing, beautifully shaped and very dancey». The Financial Times has called it «A Swan Lake to delight the eye». The critics have noted the legendary lyric «swan act» with its tense asymmetric cord groups and the famous adagio, the suite of the national dance patterns in the ball scene.
Prominent artists of the ballet company as well as young dancers recently introduced in the performance will take part in the Canada tour. The role of Odette-Odile is entrusted to Oksana Bondareva and Irina Kosheleva. Conductor Valery Ovsyanikov.
