The Mikhailovsky Season in Moscow

On 18-22 March the Mikhailovsky Theatre will present several performances in Moscow. In the framework of the Golden Mask Awards the theatre will present some of the best productions of the 2009/10 theatre season which garnered 13 nominations for the most prestigious Russian theatre award. The Moscow public will see the opera La Juive, the ballets Swan Lake and In a Minor Key. The programme of the season also includes ballets Duende and Without Words which are being produced by the Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet Nacho Duato. These ballets will be presented in Moscow right after the Petersburg première, which is planned for 15 March.

Neil Shicoff will appear as Eléazar in La Juive. The renowned singer has made a brilliant career and has performed at the world’s leading opera houses is nominated for the Golden Mask Award in the category Best Male Opera Role for his role in the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s production. It’s the first case in the history of the Golden Mask that a foreign artist is nominated for this particular award.

J.F. Halévy’s opera La Juive is nominated in seven categories: Best Opera Production, Best Conductor (Peter Feranec), Best Stage Director (Arnaud Bernard). Best Stage Designer in Music Theatre (Herbert Murauer), Best Female Opera Role (Maria Jose Siri for the role of Rachel and Natalia Mironova for the role of Eudoxie), Best Male Opera Role (Neil Shicoff for the role of El?azar).

Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake is nominated in three categories: Best Ballet Production, Best Choreographer (Mikhail Messerer, Ballet Master in Chief of the Mikhailovsky Theatre) and Best Female Ballet Role (Mikhailovsky Ballet principal dancer Ekaterina Borchenko for the role of Odette-Odile).

The ballet In a Minor Key is nominated in three categories: Best Ballet Production, Best Choreographer (Slava Samodurov) and Best Lighting Designer in Music Theatre (Simon Bennison).
