Mikhailovsky Theatre on tour in Tokyo

In November, the Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet company will embark on a fresh tour to Japan’s capital city. From 21 to 24 November 2019, Tokyo’s magnificent Bunka Kaikan theatre and concert hall will host productions of The Flames of Paris and The Sleeping Beauty.

Japanese audiences are among the most devoted classical ballet fans and have long been acquainted with the Mikhailovsky company, for whom tours of the country have become a well-established tradition.

Boris Asafiev’s The Flames of Paris is a grand historical and romantic fresco of the French Revolution, created by eminent choreographer Vasily Vaynonen in 1932. It counts among the most treasured examples of Soviet art. This year, the full version of the ballet, which has been carefully updated by Mikhail Messerer, will be presented to Japanese audiences for the first time.

The Sleeping Beauty, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet as reinterpreted by Spanish master of contemporary choreography Nacho Duato, has become a reflection of the innovative processes that are taking place in ballet today, and is certain to resonate with audiences from the Land of the Rising Sun.
