Iolanta

performed in Russian

In this original production director Andriy Zholdak places the opera’s characters on the cusp of two worlds. They experience changes in their lives, torn between reality, which attracts them with its vital power, and the spiritual world woven from faith and sacral knowledge. Tchaikovsky himself is one of the characters. The composer empathizes with his heroine and for some reason is convinced that Iolanta will prefer the hidden life of the soul to the temptations of earthly life.
