Without Words. Nunc Dimittis. Prelude

This one-act ballet was produced specifically for the Mikhailovsky Theatre company. It was created by Nacho Duato in the first few months of his time in Russia. Duato was inspired by music closely connected to liturgical tradition. However, the choreographer’s own spiritual experience has profoundly influenced his interpretation of it. The result draws the audience „towards something mystical, otherworldly; they sense the deep connection between this mortal life and the presence of other worlds“. The Spanish choreographer’s literary notions of Russia merged with his experiences during his first weeks in St. Petersburg, discovering the true essence of the city. Theatre critics have discerned reflections of this fusion in the choreography, in the ballet’s striking score and, in particular, in the costuming, the style of which is reminiscent of traditional Russian dress.
