Maria Guleghina

Maria Guleghina began her professional career at the State Opera in Minsk, and one year later she made her debut at La Scala as Amelia in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera opposite Luciano Pavarotti. Today Guleghina is the only operatic singer to have performed the main parts in sixteen La Scala premieres, including Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and Tosca and Verdi’s I due Foscari, Un ballo in maschera, and Macbeth. Since her 1991 debut at the Metropolitan Opera, Guleghina has performed there in the leadings roles in Verdi’s Aida, Macbeth, and Nabucco, Puccini’s Turandot and Tosca, Bellini’s Norma, Giordano’s Andrea Chenier, Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, and many others. Maria Guleghina also regularly performs at the Royal Opera House in London, Paris Opera, Liceu Theatre in Barcelona, Bavarian Opera in Munich, German Opera in Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Mariinsky Theatre, Arena di Verona, and Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires. Additionally, Maria Guleghina is an accomplished concert artist singing numerous concerts with orchestra and recitals with piano each season in Europe and Asia.

She has performed on numerous occasions with the world’s great singers and conductors, among them Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson, José Cura, Samuel Ramey, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Riccardo Muti, James Levine, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Fabio Luisi, and Claudio Abbado.

In recent years, the singer has been expanding her repertoire, performing both in German operas (Wagner’s Lohengrin) and the Russian operas of the 20th century (Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel).

Maria Guleghina has received many prizes for operatic competitions. For her social activities, she has been awarded the Order of Holy Olga, the highest order of the Russian Orthodox Church. Maria Guleghina is an honorary board member of the International Paralympics Committee as well as Global Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF.
