BWW Reviews: The Mikhailovsky Ballet in Giselle
The Mikhailovsky Ballet is on its first United States tour and is now at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center through November 23. The Company features several of Russia's greatest dancers: Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev, formerly of the Bolshoi Ballet, and Leonid Sarafanov, formerly of the Mariinsky. It will surely conquer New York City and Los Angeles, and soon the rest of the world.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre has opened the new season with a ballet ‘triptych’. No anthems were sung and no speeches given before the curtain rose on the first production of the new theatrical year. Instead, without the slightest fuss, the theatre launched straight into a première. The legendary Class Concert, with choreography by Asaf Messerer, has been brought to the Mikhailovsky stage by the heir to that dancing dynasty, Mikhail Messerer.

The Mikhailovsky Ballet, La Fille mal gardée
It is over half a century since Russia first welcomed Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée when it arrived as part of the repertory in The Royal Ballet’s inaugural visit to Leningrad with a performance held during the White Nights, on 15 June 1961, the year following its premiere in London. Ashton recalled that the ballet was received by the Russians as ‘a triumph’. ‘They just wouldn’t stop clapping’, he told a friend on his return home.
